Who doesn’t LOVE doughnuts? Especially when they are baked, chocolate, and orange flavoured, and topped with ganache and chocolate sprinkles!

Baked doughnuts are so much easier (and less messier!) to make than fried doughnuts, and they are much healthier, too. Which means we can have more than one at a time. 😉

Also, chocolate for breakfast!

How to make Baked Double Chocolate Orange Doughnuts

Ingredients you’ll need:

  • Plain/all-purpose flour
  • Baking powder
  • Baking soda
  • Cocoa powder
  • Salt
  • Zest of 1 large orange
  • Ground nutmeg
  • Orange juice
  • Large egg
  • Light brown sugar
  • Greek-style yogurt
  • Unsalted butter

For the glaze:

  • Chocolate chips
  • Unsalted butter
  • Light corn syrup/golden syrup
  • Orange juice
  • Chocolate sprinkles, for topping

To make these doughnuts, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cocoa powder, salt, nutmeg, and zest. Set aside.

Whisk together the orange juice, egg, sugar, yogurt, and melted butter until combined.

Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, and mix until just combined. Do not over-mix.

Spoon the batter into a greased doughnut pan and smooth out the tops. Bake for 5 – 7 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Allow to cool in the pan for 5 – 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

For the glaze, simply place the chocolate chips, butter, and syrup in a heat-proof bowl, and microwave until completely melted and smooth, stirring every 20 seconds. Stir in the orange juice.

Dip each doughnut into the glaze, garnish with chocolate sprinkles, and leave to set on the wire rack.

  1. I took had issues with the batter being too thick and did not get 12 out of the recipe. I did not read all the comments before baking these but should have to get more tips.

  2. Hi there….I made this recipe but had to add about 1/2 cup more liquid. I used the leftover juice and also added some milk. I cooked them for 15 minutes and they came out beautifully!! Thanks for the recipe share….so good.

  3. Hello! Tried this recipe yesterday. It was amazing!!! But I have one question: is batter supposed to be really thick or I did sth wrong?

  4. The taste is great and love the glaze. My experience was that the batter was too dry. I had to add additional juice in order to combine dry and wet ingredients and was challenging getting into pan. Even with this additional liquid they came out dry. Perhaps I should have added something else in lieu of more juice…

    1. Hi Tonya! The batter is quite thick, but spreadable. I can’t really say why they came out really dry for you, but I can give a few tips for next time. Try using a little less flour, about 1 cup and check the consistency of the batter. Also, you could try using buttermilk or whole milk instead of Greek-style yoghurt. I hope this helps! 🙂

  5. Thanks for sharing your recipe, yummo doughnut. If I were to comment would like more orange in the icing, thinking maybe some extract next time. And I only got 6 healthy doughnuts with the Wilton pan. This recipe is a keeper, so chocolate tasting. Will serve at my next brunch.

  6. In the recipe, you call for 1/2 cup light brown sugar, but no where does it say where to add it., and when I mixed them up., they were so stiff, I had to add 1/2 cup milk to the batter to get them to be spreadable in the pan!

    1. Hi! The sugar is added in Step 3 in the recipe. The doughnut batter should already be spreadable. Make sure you are measuring your flour out correctly, and if you’re not already, use kitchen scales. Measuring flour in cups is not always reliable and correct. 🙂

  7. These make me want a donut pan like whoah. I keep telling myself I have enough kitchen equipment, but there’s always something else I could use…like this! Must have these donuts in my life!

  8. Chocolate and orange! It doesn’t get better than that. That’s such a great combination. And I love baked doughnuts. I hate standing over a fryer and having hot oil pop at me.

  9. Well I made these today and they turned out AMAZING!! Family and friends loved them…..thank you so much 🙂

  10. I love doughnuts!! I do!! 😉 These doughnuts have been making me drool all weekend Marsha! I know, it’s getting messy. Lol. Love that they’re so simple to make. Plus, you are the official Queen of Glaze. Just sayin’. Hope you have an awesome week! Pinning. xo

  11. Hi. The recipe looks amazing and I want to try it right away…but I don’t have any fresh oranges on hand. Is it possible to use orange essence as a substitute? If yes, then how much? Thanks 🙂
