Ingredients you’ll need
Here’s a list of ingredients you’ll need to make this drink. You can find my recipe card at the bottom of this post for the complete list with their amounts.
- Whole milk: You can use semi-skimmed, but I love the creaminess of whole milk in this drink.
- Chocolate: High quality chocolate you enjoy eating on its own. If using milk or semi-sweet chocolate, the hot chocolate may already be sweet enough without sugar. If using bittersweet or dark chocolate, you may need added sugar.
- Vanilla extract
- Caster/granulated sugar: Optional, for added sweetness.
How to make Homemade Hot Chocolate
To make this drink, simply add the milk to a large microwave-safe bowl or jug, and heat in 1 minute intervals until very hot to the touch (but not bubbling). Set aside.
Add the chocolate to a separate microwave-safe bowl and heat in 30 second intervals, stirring after each one, until melted and smooth.
Add the melted chocolate to the hot milk, and whisk until combined. Whisk in the vanilla. Test the sweetness of the hot chocolate, and add enough sugar to your taste.
Pour into your favourite mugs, and top with whipped cream and/or marshmallows!
The printable recipe card with the FULL list of ingredients and instructions can be found at the bottom of this post.
NOTE: For best results, I highly recommend using the gram measurements (with a digital scale), rather than the cup measurements.
Cup measurements are simply not accurate enough, and I cannot guarantee the best results if you use them.
This Homemade Hot Chocolate is:
- super quick and easy to throw together
- deliciously creamy and silky-smooth
- LOADED with chocolate flavour
- the perfect hot drink for chocolate lovers
How long will this hot chocolate last? For leftover hot chocolate, allow to cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
Can I reheat this hot chocolate? Yes, hot chocolate can be reheated in the microwave until hot but not boiling.
How much sugar should I add? Depending on the type of chocolate you use, you may want to omit the sugar. If using milk or semi-sweet, the hot chocolate may already be sweet enough. If using dark or bittersweet chocolate, you may want to add the sugar.
After making the hot chocolate, test it, then add enough sugar to reach desired sweetness. I mention up to 2 tablespoons, because that would equal 2 teaspoons per serving (3 drinks).
You can even stir in the sugar after pouring into mugs.
