I absolutely love a homemade hot chocolate made with real chocolate!

This hot chocolate is made with milk chocolate and white chocolate for a delicious flavour combination. It’s creamy and silky-smooth, and dyed a beautiful red for Valentine’s Day.

Top with whipped cream and sprinkles for an even more indulgent treat.

Ingredients you’ll need

Here’s a list of ingredients you’ll need to make this drink. You can find my recipe card at the bottom of this post for the complete list with their amounts.

  • Whole milk: I like to use full fat milk for the most creamy hot chocolate.
  • Heavy cream: For extra thickness and creaminess.
  • Milk chocolate: Use a good quality chocolate you enjoy eating on its own. Flavour is everything here.
  • White chocolate: Use a good quality chocolate.
  • Vanilla extract
  • Red food colouring

How to make Red Velvet Hot Chocolate

To make this hot chocolate, simply add the milk and cream to a large microwave-safe bowl or jug, and heat in 1 minute intervals until very hot to the touch (but not bubbling). Set aside.

Add the chocolates to a separate microwave-safe bowl and heat in 20 second intervals, stirring after each one, until melted and smooth.

Add the melted chocolate to the hot milk mixture, and whisk until combined.

Whisk in the vanilla and enough red food colouring to reach your desired shade.

Pour into mugs or heat-proof glasses, and top with whipped cream and sprinkles. Serve and enjoy!
